Sharing or transferring data on MTN Nigeria is a very handy feature. It allows people to send some of their active internet data to another MTN user. You can also buy data for someone else if they need it, or even request data from a friend when you are running low. MTN calls this service Data Gifting and Data Share.
It is designed to help families, friends, and teams stay connected, so no one has to pause browsing, using social media, or doing work online.
MTN Data Sharing and Transfer Services
MTN’s Data Gifting and Data Sharing services let you do a few things. You can send part of your existing data balance to another MTN number, buy a new data bundle for someone else, or request data from someone else if you urgently need it.
The difference between data transfer and data gifting is that data transfer takes part of your current data bundle and sends it to someone else, while data gifting means you buy a completely new bundle for another person.
Requirements Before Sharing MTN Data
- Active MTN line for both sender and recipient.
- Enough data in your account (minimum 100 MB).
- Daily and monthly limits apply; bonus or promotional data usually cannot be shared.
How to Share MTN Data Using USSD Codes
- Dial *321# and select Data Transfer.
- Enter the recipient’s MTN number.
- Choose the amount (100 MB, 200 MB, 500 MB, 1 GB, etc.).
- Confirm the transfer.

How to Transfer via SMS
Send: Transfer RecipientNumber DataAmount to 312. Data comes from your balance; confirmation is sent by MTN.
Using the myMTN NG App
Download the app, log in, and navigate to Share or Data Gifting. Select the recipient, choose the amount, and confirm. The app tracks bundles, shows remaining balance, and remembers numbers for quick transfers.
How to Buy Data for a Friend
Use USSD: 312BundleActivationCode*RecipientNumber# or the myMTN NG app to buy a new bundle directly for someone else.
Requesting Data from a Friend
Dial 31283# and enter the MTN number. The sender must approve the request. Check pending requests with 31284#.
Limits and Rules
- Maximum 5 GB per day; up to ten transfers per month.
- Minimum 100 MB per transfer; keep at least 100 MB in your balance.
- Only eligible bundles can be shared; leftover data from multiple plans cannot be combined.
- Requests can be made up to five times daily with no limit on received requests.
