How to Link & Unlink Your NIN to Airtel SIM in Nigeria

In Nigeria, every Airtel SIM must be connected to your National Identification Number (NIN). If you don’t link it, your number can get blocked, and you won’t be able to make calls. Linking your NIN makes sure your line works without interruption.

Sometimes numbers get linked to your NIN by mistake or without your permission. You might want to unlink a number if:

  • Someone registered a SIM with your NIN without asking you
  • It’s an old number you don’t use anymore
  • You want to clean up your NIN records

Always keep your NIN private and double-check before linking it to avoid mistakes.

How to Link Your NIN to Airtel

There are a few ways to link your NIN: USSD code, Airtel website, customer care, NIMC MobileID app, or visiting a service centre.

1. Using USSD Code

  1. Make sure your Airtel SIM is active and registered in your name.
  2. Dial *996# (used to be *121#).
  3. Choose the option to link your number if it hasn’t been linked yet.
  4. To check your NIN status, select 4 → 1. You’ll see your NIN and linked number.
  5. Enter your 11-digit NIN and confirm.
  6. You’ll get an SMS confirming the link.

This is free and works on all phones.

2. Using the Airtel Website

  1. Go to the Airtel NIN portal on your internet device.
  2. Enter your Airtel number and click Proceed.
  3. You’ll get an OTP on your phone. Enter it.
  4. Enter your 11-digit NIN and submit.
  5. Wait for Airtel to confirm.

3. Using Customer Care

  1. Dial 300 (used to be 111).
  2. Pick your language and speak to a representative.
  3. Answer questions to prove you own the number.
  4. They will guide you to link your NIN.

4. Using NIMC MobileID App

  1. Download the MWS: NIMC MobileID app from the Play Store or Apple Store.
  2. Log in with your NIN and PIN.
  3. Tap My Device → Add Mobile Number.
  4. Enter your Airtel number and verify it with an OTP.
  5. Confirm, and your number is linked.

The app also shows all numbers linked to your NIN.

5. Visiting an Airtel Service Centre

If other methods don’t work, go to a nearby Airtel office with your NIN slip and ID.

  1. A representative will help you link your number.
  2. Sometimes, they may check your fingerprints.
  3. Your line will be reactivated after linking.

Getting Your NIN

If you don’t have a NIN yet, you can get it:

  1. Dial *346#.
  2. Select 1 to retrieve your NIN (20 Naira fee).
  3. If your phone is registered with NIMC, your NIN will appear.
  4. You can also verify it online at the NIMC verification portal.

How to Unlink Numbers from Your NIN

Unlinking is harder because the NIN is a government record. You can remove numbers that are incorrect, old, or fraudulently linked.

1. Check Linked Numbers via USSD

  • Dial *996#
  • Go to view linked numbers
  • You may get an SMS showing all numbers linked to your NIN

2. Use NIMC MobileID App

  • Log in with your NIN and the number used to register it
  • Tap Linked Numbers to see all numbers
  • Select a number → Report a Number → give a reason → submit
  • The number will be removed (not all features always work)

3. Visit Airtel Service Centre

  • Bring your NIN slip and ID
  • Ask for a NIN de-linkage request
  • Staff will verify your identity and submit to NIMC if needed

This is the most reliable method.

4. Contact NIMC Directly

If other methods fail, email or contact NIMC. Provide proof of identity and ownership to unlink numbers.

Linking After Your Number is Blocked

If your number is blocked for not linking your NIN or because of errors:

  • Use *996# or NIMC app
  • Visit an Airtel office if needed
  • Complete verification (sometimes with fingerprints)
  • Your line will be reactivated

By following these steps, your Airtel number stays active, your NIN is safe, and you can link or unlink numbers whenever needed.
